California Motor Vehicles Department Appeals Chrysler Ruling.

Sep. 19–The state Department of Motor Vehicles on Thursday announced that it’s going to court in an attempt to revive a controversial penalty against Chrysler Corp. and validate the agency’s findings that the auto maker illegally sold defective cars to more than 100 customers in the early 1990s.

California to Reweigh Chrsyler Penalty

The Chrysler Corporation said yesterday that California regulators had overturned proposed sanctions against the company over charges that it had violated California's ''lemon law.'' The penalty could have prevented the company from shipping vehicles to the state for a period of 45 days. The settlement ends a threat from California officials to impose a 45-day ban on Chrysler sales in the state, a move the automaker argued would have cost it $500 million. The dispute involved 116 vehicles Chrysler resold in 1991 and 1992 that had been bought back under the state's so-called ''lemon'' law.
